President/CEO, Steve Geil, to Step Down

A Message from the EDC Chairman of the Board:

It is with great reluctance that the  Economic Development Corporation serving Fresno County announces the resignation of Mr. Steve Geil, President and CEO.  Mr. Geil announced that he would be leaving the EDC to pursue other opportunities.

Mr. Geil has agreed to remain in his position as the Board begins a search for his replacement. “The last five years have been the greatest experience, and most fun, anyone could wish for. I have met and worked with so many extraordinary people and families who want nothing more than to improve the quality of life for all of Fresno County citizens.” Geil said.

Mr. Geil has been a visionary for the organization and brought an energy and enthusiasm that will not be easily duplicated.  His efforts have brought our organization to a new level and he will leave the organization in a better position because of these efforts.

We wish Mr. Geil the best in his ventures and thank him for all that he has done to better the EDC.

Ed Dunkel
Chairman of the Board

Business & Community Development Department Activity

The EDC was recently recognized by the County of Fresno Board of Supervisors and Department of Social Services (DSS) for our assistance with the Fresno County annual job fair. The 2011 Fair Today, Job Tomorrow Job Fair served more than 10,000 job seekers and 200 employers. Approximately 1000 job offers were made as a result of this job fair. The EDC mainly assisted with employer outreach and marketing. In addition, the EDC partnered with Fresno County DSS, the Central Fresno Weed and Seed group, and the County of Fresno Library to conduct a pre-job fair job seeker preparedness event at the Ted C. Wills Community Center. This event consisted of workshops on mock interviewing, job fair etiquette, community resources, and using hiring credit programs to market oneself as a qualified job seeker. The EDC, KPMH Fox 26, and the Central California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce were presented with an award from the DSS and a resolution from the Board of Supervisors.

New Employment Opportunity (NEO) labor subsidy program now available to employers

The County of Fresno Department of Social Services (DSS) has a new subsidized employment program called the New Employment Opportunity, or NEO, which gives CalWORKs participants work experience and participating employers a reimbursement of up to $600 per month.  The subsidy time period can last up to six months and the program is set to expire in September 2012. The program requires positions offering no less than 35 hours per week.  DSS will assign a staff Job Developer to each participating employer to assist with the program, candidate screening and identification, and assist in employee retention. Participating employers are asked to make a good faith effort to retain NEO placements beyond the subsidized employment timeframe. Employers are also required to have Commercial General Liability Insurance and Worker’s Compensation Insurance in order to qualify.

If you would like more information about participating in this program, please contact Devon Jones (559) 476-2510.
