Fresno City College Vocational Training Center

With a 94 percent-plus placement rate, it's apparent that the Fresno City College Vocational Training Center is a significant resource to both its students and the community. The VTC staff does its part by identifying needed job skills of employers, and VTC students do their part by acquiring those skills through the hands-on training VTC provides. For more than 31 years, VTC has taught practical skills in an environment closely resembling the actual workplace. This learning environment, along with a "hands-on" educational style, allows students to develop skills that best prepare them for their chosen careers. Open entry allows flexible start dates.

After extensive evaluation, The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence has designated VTC an ASE certified training facility in engine performance/electrical and brakes, suspension/steering. CTC provides employable skills training to students 18 years of age and older, who do or do not possess a high school diploma; or, if under 18 with a high school diploma or equivalent. Training programs are from 10 to 30 weeks and are designed for concentrated learning.

Working in partnership with industry, CTC's programs mirror industries' needs; new programs are continually developed to teach skills that relate directly to jobs. The end result is highly skilled workers ready to land jobs that pay well. FCC's Vocational Training Center has received state and national recognition as a model vocational education school excelling in community partnerships, competency based education and job placement. Open entry allows individual instruction with "senior" students mentoring new students.

Fresno Center for New Americans (FCNA)

Fresno Center for New Americans (FCNA) was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1991, to respond to the growing needs of Southeast Asians (Cambodians, Hmong, Lao, & Vietnamese) in Fresno County. Some of those immediate and critical needs include acculturation and general health education. Today FCNA's scope of services also encompasses clients from many other areas around the world besides Southeast Asia. Russians and other former Soviet Union refugees have also been able to access employment and social services through FCNA. In addition, FCNA strives and engages in educational, social, economic challenges, and other issues that continue to plague the refugee/new American community.

Through transition and strategic planning, FCNA has grown from a three-staff to a 42 staff organization. Other current services include Hmong refugee jobs services, beginning English classes, health access education, research and advocacy, networking and partnering with civic leaders to build a more cohesive and healthier community.

As set forth in the Articles of Incorporation, FCNA was formed to assist refugees and immigrants to become self-sufficient, self fulfilled, and productive members of the community, while fostering cultural preservation and promoting cross-cultural understanding.
